After initially declaring on Twitter that she would not be attending the sentencing for Larry Nassar, the disgraced former Michigan State and United States Gymnastics doctor, 23-year-old Needham, Massachusetts native Aly Raisman decided she would attend and speak at the sentencing after all.
Raisman was the captain for the gold medal-winning United States Gymnastics team in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, otherwise known as the “Fierce Five”, and in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, otherwise known as the “Final Five”. In two Olympics so far, she has racked up three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
She is one of more than 140 gymnasts who have accused Nassar of sexually abusing her. Others include Olympians McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles and Jordyn Wieber.
Here is a video of Raisman’s statement.
