The impossible has happened.

The #2 seed Mississippi State Bulldogs (34-4) have defeated the #1 seed Connecticut Huskies (36-1) in the 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Final Four on a buzzer beater in overtime by junior guard Morgan William to win by a score of 66-64. This historic upset comes just one season after the Bulldogs fell to the Huskies by a score of 98-38 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Bulldogs’ junior forward Victoria Vivians led the team with 19 points and 3 made 3-point field goal attempts. Huskies’ forward Gabby Williams led all scorers with 21 points and 7 made field goal attempts. She also blocked a game-high 4 shots.

Connecticut had won the previous four NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship games dating back to the 2013 season. They were also on an NCAA record 111-game winning streak. Their previous loss came in a regular season game against the Stanford Cardinal on Monday, November 17th, 2014, by a score of 88-86. That loss also came in overtime.

This game was reminiscent of the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four matchup in 2015 featuring the 38-0 Kentucky Wildcats and the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers went on to do the unthinkable and knock off the unbeaten Wildcats by a score of 71-64 to advance to the National Championship game against the Duke Blue Devils, where they were then defeated by a score of 68-63.

The Bulldogs will advance to take on the #1 seed South Carolina Gamecocks (32-4) in the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship game on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017, at 6:00 PM EDT.
