With their 119-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, the Washington Wizards (46-28) have locked up their first division title since the 1978-1979, clinching the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference with eight games to go in the regular season.
The division title is the franchise’s first as the Wizards, and it is their first in the Southeast Division. Their division title in the 1978-1979 season was when the franchise was the Washington Bullets in the Atlantic Division.
The Wizards’ division title drought of 37 seasons was the longest active drought of its kind in all of US professional sports. Now, that drought is over, and the Wizards can look towards getting to their first NBA championship since 1979 and winning their first NBA championship since 1978, a championship that remains the franchise’s lone NBA title.
