Phillip Lahm, 33, confirmed his retirement early Tuesday, following a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg, clarifying an initial report by German publisher SportBild.
The Bayern Munich Captain stated after the DFB Cup win that he is “capable of giving my best until the end of the season but no longer” when asked about his retirement.
The German international, who is on contract until 2018, plans to go on a year ahead of schedule.
“I’ve told the Bayern officials that I’m retiring from playing at the end of the season,” he told the media.
Lahm has been with the club since the early 2000’s, with a two-year loan to Stuttgart being his only leave from Munich. He has made over 500 appearances now, and he has been a solid right back and holding midfielder for the past few years.
