Biggest Signing: Oscar to Shanghai SIPG for £60 million
In one of the most bizarre Chinese club signings yet, we saw Oscar, the Brazilian attacking midfielder, leave his longtime club of Chelsea for the big money China leagues. Despite being nearly a record signing for any departing Premier League player so far, we can expect to see higher fees for big name players later this summer.
Most Signings by One Club-Wigan Athletic: 13 Signings
Wigan was busy this January, amassing a total of 13 loan-ins and transfers. Notable signings being James Weir and Alex Bruce, both from Hull City, on loan. Yanic Wildschut, a left winger, surprisingly sold for €8.2 million to Norwich City.
Other Notable Transfers:
Alexander Pato – Villarreal to Tianjin Quanjian for £15.4m
Yunnus Malli – Mainz to Wolfsburg for £10.7m
Julian Draxler – Wolfsburg to PSG for £34m
Manolo Gabbiadini – Napoli to Southampton for £14.6m
Dimitri Payet – West Ham to Marseille for £25m
Memphis Depay – Manchester United to Lyon for £17m
Gabriel Jesus – Palmeiras to Manchester City for £27m
Morgan Schneiderlin – Everton to Manchester United for £20m
With more than £220 million spent in this January transfer window, it has certainly been eventful. This was not much larger than last year, but the numbers continue to grow. As inflation steadily increases, so do the transfer fees. However, we are starting to see £20 million transfer fees become the norm, which will no doubt increase in the future.
