Following the team’s plane crash over Columbia last week, CONMEBOL, the South American Federation of Football, have awarded Chapacoense the title and prize money.
Atletico Nacional, the team that Chapacoense was supposed to face in the Sudamericana final, originally made a statement saying they wished for the title to be awarded to the team. As the days went on, more and more teams plead CONMEBOL, and they eventually gave in.
This wonderful gesture by the organization brings out the beauty in football, and class acts like these should not be taken for granted. The prize money will most likely go toward building up a team from the ground up. Even though many Brazilian giants have offered up some of their lower players for loan with no fee, Chapacoense will still need the money if they are to find some permanent players.
