Pagenaud Takes Pole for IndyCar Championship Finale at Sonoma

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud, who drives a Chevrolet-powered car, topped the speed charts in the qualification session for this weekend’s Verizon IndyCar Series race, the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, which is the final race of the season, around the 11-turn 2.385-mile natural terrain Sonoma Raceway road course in Sonoma, California with a fastest lap time of 76.2565 seconds.

Helio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya, Will Power, and Graham Rahal rounded out the top 5 fastest drivers in this qualifying session. Each of the top 5 drivers drive Chevrolet-powered cars except for Rahal, who drives a Honda-powered car. Drivers of the Chevrolet-powered cars took the top 4 and 9 of the top 13 spots on the starting grid for tomorrow’s race. You can see full qualifying results at Indycar.com.

The lone practice session after qualifications will take place tomorrow, Sunday, September 18th, at 2:30 PM ET. The race itself will be held tomorrow, Sunday, September 18th at 6:50 PM ET and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network starting at 6:30 PM ET. This race will determine the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series champion.
