Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves, who drives a Chevrolet-powered car, topped the speed charts in the first practice session for this weekend’s Verizon IndyCar Series race, the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, which is the final race of the season, around the 11-turn 2.385-mile natural terrain Sonoma Raceway road course in Sonoma, California with a fastest lap time of 77.3298 seconds.
Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal, Jack Hawskworth, and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top 5 fastest drivers in this practice session. Each of the top 5 drivers drive Honda-powered cars except for Castroneves. Drivers of the Honda-powered cars took 5 of the top 6 and 7 of the top 9 spots on the speed charts in this first practice session. You can see full practice results at Indycar.com.
There will be 2 more practice sessions before qualifications for the race. The next practice session will be held later today at 5:45 PM ET, and the next practice session after that will be held tomorrow, Saturday, September 17th, at 2:00 PM ET. Qualifications for the race will take place tomorrow, Saturday, September 17th, at 6:00 PM ET, and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network. The lone practice session after qualifications will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, September 18th, at 2:30 PM ET. The race itself will be held on Sunday, September 18th at 6:50 PM ET and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network starting at 6:30 PM ET. This race will determine the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series champion.
