Team Penske’s Will Power, who sits in 2nd place in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series standings, has been medically cleared to drive in the 2016 series finale at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California on Sunday, September 18th following a crash at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York last Sunday during the IndyCar Grand Prix at the Glen that left him with concussion-like symptoms.
Power sits 43 points behind his teammate Simon Pagenaud in this season’s championship standings, and is the only driver that can mathematically win this year’s championship other than Pagenaud, who has led the championship standings since after the 2nd race of the season at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Both drivers share a series-high win total of 4 victories this season out of the 15 races which have been contested thus far.
Power won the 2014 IndyCar title, while Pagenaud has never won an IndyCar title. Power has also won at Sonoma 3 times before, while Pagenaud’s best career finish at Sonoma is 3rd place. Double points will be awarded for all finishing positions in this year’s series finale at Sonoma.
The 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series championship will be settled on Sunday, September 18th at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California, and it will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network starting at 6:30 PM ET. The race itself will begin at 6:50 PM ET.
