You may have seen the name Lilly King on your social media a fair amount of times this past week, and for good reason. The new owner of a gold medal has been developing one of the Olympics’ best rivalries with Russia’s Yulia Efimova.
Efimova is a confirmed drug cheat, and her country was already known to have experienced using illegal substances. When the Olympic Commitee controversially let Efimova participate in the Olympics, hours before her first race was scheduled, Lilly King vehemently spoke out against the decision.
King was also upset that Efimova had wagged her finger after winning first place, disregarding Efimova’s accomplishment because of her past.
“You’re shaking your finger #1, and you’ve been caught for drug cheating,” King said after the race. “I’m just not a fan.”
King backed up her words by winning gold over Efimova in the 100m breaststroke. She will most likely be matched up against Efimova again Saturday in the 200m medley competition.
