Arizona Wildcats’ head football coach Rich Rodriguez made a tearful announcement Monday morning. In his announcement, he said that offensive lineman Zach Hemmila had died in his sleep either Sunday night or early Monday. His cause of death is still unknown.
“We lost a great young man,” Rodriguez said. “We were notified this morning.”
Hemmila, 22, played in all 13 games last season for the Wildcats and started in 6 of them. He would have been competing for the starting center job this upcoming season.
Grey Byrne, the Arizona athletic director, said that counselors would be made available to the team.
