Luca Filippi, the 30-year-old Italian Verizon IndyCar Series driver, will return to the cockpit for this upcoming weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto around Exhibition Place on the streets of Toronto, Ontario in Canada.
Filippi, who has started in 22 IndyCar races over the past 4 seasons, last appeared in in IndyCar race in the Grand Prix of Alabama back in April, when he finished in 18th place. In his 4 starts in the series this season, his best finish is 17th, which was at Long Beach. Starting with the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Colombian Gabby Chaves had raced in the No. 19 car that Filippi had raced in during the first 4 races of the season. Now, Filippi is back.
Last season was Filippi’s most productive season driving in the Verizon IndyCar Series. He raced in a career-high 9 races and scored 4 of his 5 career top 10 finishes during last season, including a career-high 2nd place finish at Toronto last year.
Filippi returns to Toronto looking to finish 1 step higher this year on the podium than last year, when he finished in 2nd place in a Chevrolet-powered car behind his Ed Carpenter Racing teammate Josef Newgarden. This season, Filippi will pick up where he left off at Alabama and drive a Honda-powered car for Dale Coyne Racing.
Filippi will be considered an underdog this weekend at Toronto due to driving for one of the series’ weaker teams, but his experience and recent success on the streets of Toronto could translate to a big result and a successful series return this weekend for the Italian.
