Team Penske Racing’s Simon Pagenaud, who drives a Chevrolet-powered car, topped the speed charts in qualifying for this weekend’s Verizon IndyCar Series race around the 4-turn 0.894-mile D-shaped oval in Newton, Iowa for the Iowa Corn Indy 300 with a 2-lap average speed of 185.855 miles per hour for the team’s 500th all-time pole. Pagenaud has led the championship standings since after the 2nd race of the season at Phoenix.
Josef Newgarden, Helio Castroneves, Max Chilton, and Charlie Kimball will round out the top 5 starting spots for tomorrow’s race, all driving Chevrolet-powered cars. The fastest driver of a Honda-powered car was Mikhail Aleshin, who was 9th fastest on the speed charts, and will roll off on the inside of row 5. Drivers of the Chevrolet-powered cars took the top 8 and 10 of the top 11 spots on the starting grid for tomorrow’s race. The final practice session will be held tonight at 7:15 PM ET. The race itself will be held tomorrow at 5:40 PM ET and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network starting at 5:00 PM ET.
