The NHL has approved of an expansion that will allow a new team to be located in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. This team will be the league’s 31st team and will begin play in the 2017-2018 NHL season.
The expansion team will be the 1st team added since 1997, when the league added the Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, and the Atlanta Thrashers (who are now the Winnipeg Jets).
The team will be owned by Bill Foley and have an expansion fee of $500 million. The team will be the 1st major professional sports team to have their home in the city of Las Vegas. The team will play its home games in the newly opened state-of-the-art T-Mobile Arena, which has a seating capacity of 17,368.
