Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan topped the speed charts in the 1st practice leading up to Saturday night’s Firestone 600 with a top lap average speed of 216.745 miles per hour around the 24-degree banked 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval in Fort Worth, Texas.
Kanaan has gone the past 24 races without a win in the Verizon IndyCar Series, with his last win coming in the 2014 series finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. His winless drought is the 5th highest among active drivers, and he has won just 2 races since the 2010 season.
In today’s practice, Kanaan, who placed 2nd at the 2015 Firestone 600, led a top 4 Chevrolet-powered car sweep, as he was followed by teammate Scott Dixon, who won last year’s Firestone 600, Josef Newgarden, and teammate Charlie Kimball. Marco Andretti, who was 5th quickest on the speed charts, was the fastest driver of a Honda-powered car.
Drivers of the Honda-powered cars still managed to take 5 of the top 11 positions, despite not getting any spots inside the top 4. The top 4 drivers of the Honda-powered cars all drive for Andretti Autosport, which will look to carry over its momentum from being fast all May at Indianapolis and finishing 1st and 2nd in the Indianapolis 500.
Qualifying for the Firestone 600 begins at 4:15 PM ET and will be broadcast at 6:00 PM ET on NBC Sports Network. Another practice session will take place tonight starting at 7:45 PM ET. The Firestone 600 itself will be broadcast starting at 8:00 PM ET tomorrow, Saturday, June 11th, also on NBCSN.
