The Verizon Indycar Series has announced their return to Watkins Glen International this Labor Day weekend for an event that will replace the Boston Indycar race that was supposed to be held the same weekend until it was canceled a few weeks ago.
The 60-lap race on the 3.4-mile 11-turn natural terrain road course in Watkins Glen, New York will take place on Sunday, September 4th, with practice and qualifications running from the 1st through the 3rd of September. The race will be the penultimate race of the 2016 Verizon Indycar Series campaign, as it sits in the 15th race slot out of 16 races on this year’s Indycar schedule.
The last time the Indycar Series raced at Watkins Glen, the race was on Saturday, July 4th, 2010. Will Power won that race. Other former winners of races at Watkins Glen who are still driving in the series this season are Scott Dixon, who won in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who won the race in 2008.
